...a lifestyle family, newborn and portrait photographer. My husband Jim and I live in Greenville, South Carolina with our puppy, Eddie, and our daughter, James, who was born in November of 2016.

Over the past several years as my passion for photography has grown, I've come to find that I am happiest and most fulfilled when photographing children, families, and the preciousness of new life with in-hospital or in-home newborn photography. The birth of my own daughter showed me the immense responsibility I have to record our story, and to leave her with photographs that are heirlooms for generations to come.

It is my hope that the photographs from your session capture the essence and sweetness of who your family is in that exact moment. That upon looking at your images 20 years from now, you'll instantly smell the sweetness of your newborn's skin, you'll feel the weight and warmth of holding your toddler in your arms, and you'll feel the simultaneous pride and tug at the heart strings of watching your child achieve their newest milestone. These are the things that we'll want to remember, and I'm so honored to document them for you.

"The human heart was not designed to beat outside the human body and yet, each child represented just that - a parent's heart bared, beating forever outside its chest."

Where it all began

They say to know where you're going, it's important to know where you're from. I grew up in Tampa, FL, the same city that both of my parents grew up in. Even my grandmother, who is 94 years old, was raised in Tampa in the mixing pot that is Ybor City. As a child, I was always creative, and developed a love for cameras and documenting my life very early on.

My interest in photography really began to develop, however, as a college sophomore when I started my first business - a healthy living blog where I documented my journey of trying to stay healthy while juggling college life. In an effort to have the most professional images possible, I decide to "borrow" my dad's DSLR camera. That old Canon camera is still in my posession today. Thanks Dad!

My Family Story

Our family story is deeply rooted in our faith and love for each other. We've experienced life's greatest joys and some of it's deepest sorrows, but every moment has made us who we are.

The City of Light

In my very last semester of college, I took a leap of faith, hopped on a plane, and without knowing a soul flew to Paris to study for 6 months. While I was there, I took a documentary photography class that forever changed how I see the world and the people in it.

I always credit my time in Paris for a large part of who I am today. I was forced to pave a path for myself, to be brave, and to really dive in and learn who I was. I learned a new way of thinking and doing, and those experiences allowed me to learn how to really see people and take in experiences. Photography is such much more than pretty pictures, and Paris is really where I learned to tell stories with my photographs.

The Single Years

After I returned from Paris and graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Finance, I took my first big girl job with a large insurance company in Greensboro, NC. If you have ever spent anytime in Greensboro, you'll know that is is a really tough town to be single in. It is a very family oriented town, which had I not been 22, single, and looking for my soul mate would have been perfect, but as a young woman trying to work and find THE ONE, it wasn't the place to be.

Three years into my life in Greensboro, I high-tailed it for Charlotte, NC. I LOVED Charlotte, and I just knew it was the place to be to learn, grown, and ultimately find the one I'd spend my life with.

And I was right.

A Long Distance Love

I was right about meeting my one and only when I moved to Charlotte. The only problem? He was in Greenville, South Carolina!

My husband Jim and I met on this crazy thing called the internet. Now that I think about it, I can credit a LOT of my life to the power of the web. I found the job I took in Charlotte online, I started two businesses that were based online, I order EVERYTHING that is in my house from Amazon, and I even used it to meet the love of my life.

After a few weeks of chatting, texting and emailing thanks to the beauty that is E-Harmony, Jim and I met one night over dinner at Nolan Kitchen in Charlotte. Our first date was rocky. Mostly because I was so nervous that I shredded an entire paper napkin under the table while we talked. But by our second date, sparks were flying.

Then Comes Marriage

They say when you know, you know. Nothing has ever been truer for me. My now husband and I hit it off almost INSTANTLY, and after our third date, I knew we'd be married one day.

After just 8 months together, we got engaged over the fourth of July weekend while visiting Atlanta. That was one of the most special weekends of my life! We had this "thing" with turtles (don't worry, I won't bore you with that cheesy story), and fittingly, Jim proposed at the George Aquarium after a beautifully planned day in Atlanta.

Just three months later, we were married on October 19th, 2014 at Mary's Cottage in downtown Greenville. Our wedding was small, family only, and the most beautiful and perfect evening. I walked down the aisle to the same song my mother did, played by a solo violinist. My dad kissed me on the cheek as he gave me away, and Jim and I promised to love each other through the many ups and downs of life that lay ahead of us.

An Unexpected Detour

My husband and I knew we wanted children, and after being married for just over a year, we decided it was the right time to try for a family. This was right around the time that I started Courtney Malone Photography, just months after starting another business, Broad & Main, where I serve other creative professionals with brand and web design.

Just days after I conducted my first day of mini sessions in the Fall of 2015, I found out I was pregnant!

Sadly just a week later on the Monday before Thanksgiving, we lost our pregnancy and over the coming weeks learned it was not just a miscarriage, but an ectopic pregnancy requiring immediate treatment and monitoring for weeks to come. I was devastated, confused and consumed by my grief. Seeing our positive pregnancy test was one of the most nerve-wracking, yet euphoric experiences of my life, and I will never forget how I felt in that moment. But that euphoria was replaced with grief as I worried over what our future held.

Every Good and perfect gift

It took many months to see the beauty that came out of our loss. By going through that experience, I realized the immense gift and blessing of family. I learned that children are not a right of passage, nor a next step in a relationship, but truly and completely a miracle and gift from God. I learned to have faith, to trust God’s perfect timing, and to know that there is always a plan at work that is far greater than anything I could imagine.

My passion for documenting families became even stronger in the months following not only our loss, but our subsequent pregnancy with our daughter, Harper “James” Malone. Our loss showed me that I was doing exactly what I was meant to do, and gave me a new eye for the beauty of family dynamics and the unique story of how each family comes to be.

Our daughter was born on November 20, 2016 at 5:54am. After 37 hours of labor, she came into this world via c-section at 7lbs 13.6 ounces and 20.75 inches long. We brought her home from the hospital one year to the DAY of losing our first pregnancy – a confirmation that the whisper I have heard all these years, and in the months leading up to her birth was God, gently pulling me towards where I was meant to be.

To Be Continued

Our family story continues to unfold every day, and documenting it with beautiful photos, tiny films, and personal stories on my blog bring me such joy. I have recently left my job in corporate America to pursue this passion of documenting families and telling stories full time, and I am full of life and creative energy.

Most importantly, I am grateful this work allows me to be at home with my daughter, James. She is my eternal muse, and the reason behind my passion for my work.

It is an honor to be a part of your family, even in the brief windows of time I get to spend with you. Thank you for trusting me with such an immense responsibility. It is my hope that as I continue to work and grow, I am able to serve families to my best ability, and provide them with photos that become family heirlooms and their greatest treasures, just as my own photographs are to me.
